I was one of your students at The Bush School. I still stand w/ Bush 41’s “public service is a noble calling” ideal; been in public service since. Public sector people, univ profs incl., mostly are mission-driven & earnest to make the world better. Horrible to see them be castigated as enemies.

I wonder, too, if faith operates a bit like your 4th point. If we hear constantly that “You are never alone if you have Jesus,” then it might be difficult for one to admit - or believe - one has experienced loneliness b/c of the implications one would have to consider having made such an admission.

The first installment of the LOTR trilogy came out my first year of college. With no idea of what I was going to watch, I saw it with friends, loved it, and bought a used paperback of The Hobbit that I read almost immediately after that theater experience.
