The Paul Levitz and Bob Rozakis caricatures in “The Story Behind the Story” were illustrated by MAD MAGAZINE's Dave Manak in 1976 -- originally created for THE AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS #13, in a feature titled “Inside the Amazing World”, which was essentially a rundown of the fanzine’s staff.

This must had taken place in one of those first comic book stores, because my Dad said that THE AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS was only available by mail order in 1976...

I thought it was this Stranger...
We were glad to back this. One of my mom's favorite books, illustrated by one of her favorite artists...
...but adapted by what used to be one of our favorite writers.
Although Gaiman would not receive any proceeds, we're still a bit... ambivalent about reading it.
At least we can enjoy the art.

Fun fact: In the lower surprint image of the Elastigirl entry, Rita is not climbing out of a mysterious "vehicle" but out of the ear of Robotman’s head, which was a scene from page 22 of the first Doom Patrol story in My Greatest Adventure #80.

Both Mystery in Space and Super Friends have been cancelled. The cancellations were not related according to Paul Levitz, DC's Manager of Business Affairs; "Mystery in Space" received very poor newsstand response and its direct sales were mediocre," Levitz explains, "Super Friends was cancelled to make room for [Roy] Thomas's new titles."
Super Friends was cancelled despite a guaranteed weekly media tie-in with the Saturday morning cartoon show. When asked for an opinion why the television show did not help sales of the comic book Levitz replied, "We've never found that a Saturday morning show had any effect on comic book sales." Levitz added that DC will be doing a Super Friends special with General Foods later this year.
