The headline and top of the piece are extremely jarring framing. The rest is fine, reporting on the tiny insider world of NY power brokers that enabled Epstein. Idk why the NYT keeps making things hard for itself with these headlines. They’re not a clickbait business.

I deactivated alerts for unsubscribes years ago because it made me feel shitty (esp when a known reader) and it just doesn’t matter that much. Much better looking at aggregate trends.

I really tried… tbf it’s an archive piece from 2004 that’s probably not playing well with their newer layout but that in itself is a problem.

It covers an insane amount of ground (probably too much, the topic should be a PhD) so the writing is extremely economical. Which will probably cost me bc academics really love it when you belabour a point. 154 footnotes/citations so far, 6 pages of bibliography, 16 of appendices.
