...empathy evened out and dehumanization of the defendant disappeared. Our findings suggest that “empathic defaults” are part of legal decision making and that introducing-- rather than ignoring-- multiple perspectives may balance the emotional scales.

ELA often connected w more affective empathy in youth, but less cognitive empathy + more distress in adults. More research is needed—esp. on different types of adversity & how we measure empathy. DM for manuscript access if needed!!
