Traditional-egalitarian neo-misnagdic liturgical maximalist. Yes, I'm the one who made that steamed hams megillah. איהו/ליה (that’s he/him in Aramaic)
my parody of "Movin' Out" about Judith, a thread (1/7)

did I ever show you my parody of “movin’ out” about Judith?

And to clarify, I am not judging them for not assimilating. Most of my circle is Jews too. I’m judging them for not assimilating while also telling other people they should assimilate

The number of times I have been told by someone whose entire social circle is Jews, who sends their kids to a Jewish day school, who works at an office with only other Jews, that immigrants need to assimilate more is more than the zero it should be
November 14, 2025 at 2:19 PM
This is also a thing that they will do while talking about how these new immigrants are changing the culture because they’re refusing to assimilate

Things evolve as they move around, but schnitzel was invented in Austria and brought to Israel by Austrian Jews who adapted it (for instance, replacing clarified butter with vegetable oil or using chicken and turkey instead of pork and veal)

Religious Zionists believe that Jewish self-rule can and should come about via secular means. It might be God working in mysterious ways, but it isn't the messianic age
November 14, 2025 at 1:11 PM
individual religious practice is not what we're talking about here. Saying “Jewish self-rule in the land of Israel will be brought about by the Messiah son of David” is not Zionist because it entails Jewish self-rule will not come about via secular means.

and in the circles where they are there are a lot of 'em

less than 1/3 I'd say actually. but they're disproportionately the rich and loud ones

hillel would probably disagree but i'd expect nothing less than sheer stringency from MY zug

currently at 101, but just in case, since shabbat is coming up, here's an extra as insurance
102) The parasha division between Vayeshev and Miqetz being in the same place as the intermission in 'Joseph etc. Dreamcoat' is not a coincidence. The rabbis have a sense of dramatic timing.

101) the best thing about rashi is that he's willing to admit when he doesn't know something. the best rashi is his comment on בׇּטְנִ֖ים
Gen. 43:11 where he admits that he doesn't know what a pistachio is. translation in alt-text

100) this might be a surprising take from someone with my name, but the true second-generation patriarch is rivka. she's the active one, the one whose decisions matter. yitzḥak is just there. perhaps it's because of the trauma he experienced as a child that he retreats into comfort and complacency
November 14, 2025 at 10:40 AM
got a few more more to add, let's go
99) Avraham is a true oleh ḥadash. He doesn't come to the land until he's already 75, he puts his life on the line to defend the honor of horrible Jordan valley settlers, he gets repeatedly taken advantage of by a fast-talking local, and his sabra kid goes to die

i was told “ככה זה בעברית” enough times that i swore never to answer a question that way

because the root of the word is בטח = trust, and the last letter isn’t a suffix but part of the word. If it were מבטך it would be “Your view” whereas מבטח is “object of trust”

not sure why you see it as a defense when the Judean people’s front are depicted as redbrowns once they show up
