It's been fascinating to trace the last 20 years of fashion trends through this show, of which much has aged badly or (more kindly) become a period piece. I lived in Portland for most of its run, so it was remarkable to learn that bangs-and-fascinators girls only broke containment for a year or two

I don't read a lot of dark academia and am surprised that this is something that's underengaged with -- it is such a key part of the complicated prestige dynamics, the aesthetics and traditions, and it's also just kind of 101 stuff, like writing about an American college without discussing majors

nowadays I couldn't be less about wheel of time, but I did read a lot of it in high school and one thing it's instilled in me is that more fantasy should be set in an almost unrecognizable future (gene wolfe of course took the same idea to levels rarely seen).

also, Christ, I also named a significant character Simon in my current manuscript; plainly the name is more of a favorite than I realize.
