Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld was a Jewish German physician, sexologist, & LGBTQ+ advocate beginning in the 1890s. He coined the term transexual. His work was groundbreaking, the American press called him "The Einstein of sex." The Nazis stripped him of citizenship, burned all his work, and exiled him.
When the Nazis first came to power, within a few months, they raided the Institute for Sexuality which did the first studies of trans people.

The books they seized were burned here, including a copy of Heinrich Heines poem that said, "where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people too."
