Generally, I’m not a fan of airports, but Amsterdam Schipol takes some beating.

Recycling centre in a National Park in Chile. It works. Visitors put the right thing in the right hole. In the UK we can’t do this because people don’t and waste becomes ‘contaminated’. It works in Denmark and Holland too. Are we too a) thick b) entitled c) belligerent to follow the rules?

Someone’s been busy in our local woods recently. Quite a bit of work gone into the new tunnel. Like it.

I was laid off this morning from USFWS as part of the sweeping DOGE cuts to probationary employees across the Dept. of Interior. To say I'm devastated doesn't even scratch the surface-I'm losing my dream job working with pallid sturgeon on the Missouri River. Solidarity with all my fed workers. 💔🐟

I've always loved the fact that the word 'sneeze' is the result of a historical accident. The original form, in the Middle Ages, was 'fnese', but someone mistook the 'f' for the long medieval 's' and wrote down 'sn-' instead.

Fneezing sounds much more like a proper, nasal sneeze.

Looks like the Ross’s gull on the Tyne has gone. I’m so happy for the the hoards of retired birders who enjoyed seeing it last week #NEBirding

Finally got to see this bird on a lunchtime dash to DBCP. Too far for photos and I can’t draw, so here is Stewart’s beautiful drawings.

I unexpectedly saw my 3000th species in the world today... Buff-winged Cinclodes at Farellones in the Chilean Andes. Because I only got poor record shots at the time, because I hadn't realised the notable landmark, here is a link to eBird.
Buff-winged Cinclodes - eBird
Fairly common in southern South America, from bogs and streams in the Andes to beaches, lakeshores, and pastures; usually near water. Feeds on the ground with a hopping and shuffling gait, sometimes cocking tail; small flocks form in migration and winter. Often in same areas as other cinclodes, especially Gray-flanked Cinclodes in the Andes and Dark-bellied Cinclodes in lowlands. Buff-winged is distinguished by clay-brown plumage tones, plain breast (vs. obvious streaking on Dark-bellied and Gray-flanked), and broad buff wing stripe shown in its raised wing song display.

Not how we would’ve chosen to see our first Markham’s Storm Petrel. @whaupbirder.bsky.social found this one injured above the beach near Arica in Chile. We alerted the natural park ranger who took into care.

I might be procaffeinating today I think…
Word of this morning is ‘procaffeinate’: to put everything on hold until you’ve had sufficient amounts of coffee.

Was watching the Druridge Bay surf scoters this afternoon. A common gull targeted one of the drakes, for unwanted attention. Despite diving and flying a short way, the gull continued to pursue it. It had obviously taken a dislike and had picked this bird out from the surrounding common scoters.
