Except "...it's chaos" I think the word you might be looking for is 'fascism.'

It's textbook fascism.

Awww, that is truly wholesome to see. I do already feel embraced by this community and I'm not even aware of what it's really about yet.
I absolutely will post on those tags to notify when I get the book and embark on the journey contained within! I await in anticipation until then! Hopefully soon!!

Actually, on second glance I don't think it is the exact species because the climate is wrong. I believe the one I found was called a "Tobacco/Hornworm Hawk Moth."

They have far more fascinating design & colors than they typically depict them as online, but I do believe identified it correctly.

Ofc, I think this characterization may be somewhat of an oversimplification as it fails to address reactionary scapegoating & fearmongering of minorities and those perceived as "outsiders." As well as nationalism + "return to Glory" narratives among other things.
Though corpocracy *is* a factor.

Magic wardrobe, perhaps? 🤔

Thank you for sharing your love for this book & for all of you practically prodding me to read it ASAP, it makes me feel warm inside bc I adore it when people fall in love w stories!
So, I wonder what this story has done to cast a spell on so many? And capture your hearts?
Must find out for myself!

Wow geesh, this book is certainly causing me to wonder now bc there are so many people obsessed and positively gushing over it. I definitely do need to determine to read it soon if only just to uncover why!
I still need to actually get ahold of the book, first, ofc. Will share on feeds when I begin!
December 5, 2024 at 12:05 AM
That all certainly seems enticing enough!
I must admit so far the series already has good things going for it: spectacular cover art, an intriguing premise, & an ecstatic fanbase.
Can't wait to experience it for myself! Also, share my thoughts as I do.
Thank you kindly for encouraging me to do so!😊

Sorry, but I did have a realization after thinking about it further. I think it's best to clarify what I meant bc, well, it's the internet.
Also, I am just 1 person sharing my opinion here & there will be ppl who disagree or have a very diff POV on it, ofc.
By “put in work” I meant roughly this: ⬇️

That being said, I get where you're coming from. When it comes to leading char in particular, it's always safer to remain w cultures you personally live or have some exp. w/.
I just don't think "safe" is the objective for many & if you are willing to put the work in & can take criticism I welcome it
December 3, 2024 at 1:22 AM
Yeah, I got to admit I don't like this take as someone quite marginalized myself. As much as I hate it when ppl in hegemonic classes use minorities as points and make no effort to speak with & understand us, relegating each of us to our own cultures is frankly ridiculous & bland.

I WANT diversity.

Antagonists don't have to inherently be villains, and can actually be major forces of character development & growth for protagonists.

Similarly, protagonists aren't necessarily heroes. They can turn out to be fighting for a cause they discover was erroneous all along.

I do believe one of the most powerful forms of resistance to the oppressive forces we live under is to remain the writers of our own stories.
To reclaim the narratives they spin and reframe them to instead center our truth - our strife for liberation & a more equitable society.

Take back our power!

I want to add that I relate to your described childhood. I also spent a lot of time either in stories from books or TV, or stories of my own creation. Still to this day, I have elaborate original paracosms & characters I use to help me process life.

I found your words both refreshing & empowering.

This was a very thought-provoking & intriguing read. Thank you for writing & sharing!

It reminded me of one of my favorite quotes:
"Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change." - Max Planck

The stories we tell about ourselves, others, & the world do impact our realities.

Lastly, I do think it's important to recognize there is a difference between subtitles and CC. Though understandably the lines begin to blur somewhat when it comes to SDH.
Deaf/HoH need *ALL* pertinent audio info. Whereas, for instance, ESL Hearing folks may need/want only the Oral speech involved.

This is, ofc, not to say the fact accessibility features are inherently vital for the original intended group(s) they're designed to facilitate the inclusion of is not worth implementing them in itself.

Rather, to contest the false narrative that they are necessarily cumbersome for everyone else.
December 2, 2024 at 10:49 PM
As an example, I am not blind yet still personally find myself benefiting from the presence of alt text. My particular neurotype makes it challenging to process information or ‘read between the lines’ at times, and having supplementary descriptions available can be quite helpful for comprehension!
December 2, 2024 at 10:47 PM
I believe this demonstrates an important lesson about accessibility features in general, as they tend towards actually enhancing others' experience of the world outside their intended use rather than the myth we are often told about it subtracting, hindering or otherwise imposing a burden on others.
