Malazan book 7 made me do a small cry.
(This is incredibly rare for me, my eyes leaking is a once-a-decade-ish event)

AWS’ Athena system is not my friend 🙈
Why use a different version of SQL? Why not enable temp tables? Why make my life hard 😓

I’m part of a little Discord writers group called IncSpec (Inclusive Speculative) and we’re putting together our first micro-anthology - flash pieces themed around ‘dragons’ - to showcase some of our members and (hopefully) raise a few bucks for a trans charity. 🏳️‍⚧️ 😁

Just found a copy of Nifft the Lean for £35 - which may sound a lot, but previously the lowest was >£100 - which means I can now finish reading every World Fantasy Award winner!

How many readers like fantasy crime as a genre? Criminal guilds, sprawling fantasy cities, dark underbellies, and secrets? Shadows of Old Town and the sequel Black Hand of Sangarie might be for you. Find it in my Linktree in bio!

My eldest (12yo) ran me close in the Plague Inc board game tonight.
Good tactical choices and a ruthless streak - made me proud!

If anyone is not familiar with non-binary British rap-poet Kae Tempest, please checkout their headline set at the Six Music Fest - full video or audio on BBC. It was stunning.

And new single, Statue in the Square is a trans battlecry that gives me goosebumps. 🏳️‍⚧️ ✊ 🎶

Next rotation of the reading cycle is the ‘personal selection’ slot.
Recently I’ve been using this to work through the Malazan books, but this time I’m returning to Jemisin’s Great Cities series, with The World We Make. I’ve loved every Jemisin I’ve read, so excited for this one 🤩

From my Bluesky indies reading list - wrapped up Tru Skies’ Cruel Gods trilogy.
First half of The End of Time is an absolute banger, loved it, second half lost the pacing a bit but ended strongly. Very satisfying. Best book of the series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 - Cruel Gods is well worth checking out!

Returning to the World Fantasy winners: Soldier of Sidon (2007 winner) is the 3rd in Wolfe’s Latro series, the ancient adventures of a god-touched Roman with memory loss. Some great parts undermined by an unsatisfying ‘stop’ rather than an ending.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 - would’ve got 5 with any kind of conclusion.
