If you look up a review for the newest Call of Duty on Google or DuckDuckGo, the top 9 results describe it as "a sleek new package offering everything you know and love". Unsurprising they are the same review sites bought and paid for by Microsoft, everyone else rightfully says it sucks shit
November 15, 2025 at 10:11 PM
I should stress, I don't (want to) play Call of Duty either and glorification of war fighters who "get the job done" is stupid and evil. But I think we should acknowledge that Call of Duty sucks shit because it's ambitionless slop cynically designed to please the lowest common denominator

If you enjoy video games because they can tap into the human condition and reveal artistic truth about our lives, love, and suffering; obviously you should not play Call of Duty. But it is funny they're doing right wing marketing to appeal to right-wingers who absolutely do not play Call of Duty

I think the funniest part of the whole "we have a production pipeline to make cutscenes fast, and we'll figure out how to piece it together later" is they launch a guided missile at discount Shadow Heart, which... should kill her lmao, only to show another cutscene of her being "arrested" unscathed

The Fortnite moments are harder to miss if you play the game's "singleplayer" campaign, which at every moment tries to stress how it's a CO-OP experience. It's empty objectives are designed to distract and pad out what really feels like boring, monotonous gameplay for gameplay's sake, dangling keys

I thought that it was interesting how despite the COD audience vocally expressing how upset they were with dream sequences in BO6, now almost every level is just that. You have a linear objective to end the level but side quests compete for your attention, completing the Fortnite-ification of COD
November 15, 2025 at 9:51 PM
They decided they couldn't be bothered to design an actual villain, so they ripped Shadow Heart from Baldur's Gate 3. I can't tell how much of this is a cynical move to game audience attention by including "recognizable actor/character/brand" or how much of this is laziness, notwithstanding AI art

I'm not going to pretend like games that do go into detail about simulating things like infantry stamina somehow are conscious about the war on terror being a lie used to kill massive swaths of people for no reason. But I am saying that there is a gap for a woke humanitarian mil-sim and should exist
November 14, 2025 at 10:19 PM
You're absolutely right to identify portrayals of war as one of the leading causes of the toxic right-wing undercurrent in our society, but saying that mil-sims are the problem puts games that show the human impact of war in the crosshairs. CODs realistic smoke on white phosphorus vs DFs famine sim

White Supremacy relies on selling war as a contained setting where vehicles, munitions, and people are disposed of like toys, and not an ongoing drain on society that has lasting impacts on civilian life. The ultimate expression of this would be if ARMA was built to have an EU5 overworld
November 14, 2025 at 10:01 PM
COD is not a mil-sim, it's a multiplayer arcade game with a jingoistic blockbuster movie attached. While I agree that their marketing direction is pandering to right wingers and is annoying at best and actively harmful at worst, it says more about American commercialization of war than war itself
November 14, 2025 at 9:57 PM
I've been advocating for years that mil-sims aren't the problem. It's their focus on war and its toys for people to play sandbox heroes and their logistics. But real war is about famine, lack of medical care, and sexual violence. A real mil-sim would show it all, and game companies aren't interested

I will work harder than ever before, ball so hard the chuds will regret everything, Ted Cruz will drink wet cement and Ron DeSantis will be extradited to Cuba because I thought it was "funny", I promise to deliver the ultimate "owning the conservatives" simulator because it speaks to the heart

I will make a visual novel about turning white supremacists and the entire republican party into hamburger meat but it's really hard because the subject matter more or less automatically disqualifies the project from any funding
