Meetings and mentoring today. The meetings will help scope out the plans for the rest of this year - always needing to reflect and review to make sure our programmes continue to be relevant for young people, and not just what adult think will help

Tuesday is an in-school mentoring day - working with some students in year 9 who benefit from the chance to work through their challenges. Some of them carry a lot of worries on their young shoulders and mentoring offers a framework of support

I work with some young people whose lives are complex. And chaotic. And sad. My job as a mentor is to remain calm and steady. Some times that means allowing space for the anger to come out. Other times, it’s listening as they try to work out why. Some times, it’s silence. #youthmentoring

Love this period between Christmas and new year. I always do a big reflection exercise. When I have looked at the year as a whole, it’s no wonder I haven’t felt at my best. There’s been some right stuff to deal with. But now it’s in perspective. And I’m still standing!

Last day in school for this term - and this year. It’s been quite the time - and reflection on it will come next week. But for now, a full day of Year 9 to look forward to! 🎄🎄🎄

Peer mentoring day for me today. This is such a joy to do - working with a group of year 10s who would never have put themselves forward for leadership roles but are now thriving. Plus a catch up with Year 11s who have been peer mentors - retaining those strong links so they continue to grow.

This week in our schools programme, we’re talking about Christmas prep. Not all my students will find the holiday time easy. Many have such complex family lives, money is very tight and tempers will flare. And they need the safe space of our sessions to be able to talk about all that.

Spent today with students in years 10 and 11. And there was a lot of tiredness - overwhelm and weariness too. Exam worries, family problems, struggles within school plus the darker days all add up. So we looked at re-prioritising and also about how they could look after themselves more too.

All set up for tomorrow - the first of three days in school every week. Year 9 mentoring, year 10 peer mentors and drop in groups for all year groups. Everything is built on kindness and respect - and quite a bit of cake 🧁

Thank you so much to everyone who has followed me in the last few days - a big welcome. Inkpots Mentoring is based in mid Sussex but we connect with young people and their families and teachers all over the UK and Europe. Last week, we launched our new website too after a rebrand: inkpots.org
My two worlds have just collided in a lovely way. Younger son who works in the rail industry met with one of my mentoring students for an online chat with two colleagues about how their company fits into the rail infrastructure and their own career paths. Very proud on several levels!
