Outside our kitchen window just now ... one of our favorite neighbors, a local black-tailed doe with her new fawn. ❤️

Sea otter in Chihuly-style waves (Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary)

Sea otters are a keystone species. Where they thrive, so do kelp forests & the diverse marine ecosystems reliant on the kelp. All lives, including our own, hinge on the complex interdependence we have w/other species. 1/2

Please do not use rodent poisons. Ever. They cause so much intense suffering and harm for wildlife.

From the official White House account. I understand they’re constantly fanning the flames of outrage, laughing all the way to the bank (literally) as they harm others. But the repercussions of their wholesale, unhinged destruction are beyond devastating.

A short timeline cleanse 🦦

On a recent volunteer shift, I spotted this raft of sea otters swimming my way.

No disturbance, shot w/1200mm equiv lens from a pier. But, when kayaking, if otters swim or dive to evade you, you're too close. ⬇️

Some gentle deer medicine just outside our window today — a mama and her two fawns passing through.

Food exchange between a mother sea otter and her pup in Monterey. (📷 from shore, w/telephoto, no otter disturbance.)

The 2nd pic shows a typical distance between my lens and the animals. Here, I used an 800mm equivalent lens w/1.4x TC, and cropped the image.

Outside our kitchen window today … love the casual pose. (She visited with her two growing fawns, clearing the fresh greens sprouting after the rains.)

I came upon this group of striped shore crabs (Pachygrapsus crassipes) foraging along rocks near the Golden Gate. Their coloration is vivid and lovely.

A bit farther south in Elkhorn Slough/Moss Landing, there's an interesting relationship between striped shore crabs and sea otters:

We're living temporarily on the edge of a forest where these gorgeous, tree-loving, Band-tailed Pigeons watch our moves from the very tops of firs and pines. I photographed this one a bit lower down ... during magic hour in a friend's garden. #birds

As a nature photographer, I love showcasing the unique magic that is each animal, always hoping to generate compassion & understanding for the species with whom we share this planet. With nature at risk, largely for our own folly, we have an obligation to protect & care for our fellow earthlings. 🌎
