So back in 1944, a German U-Boat Commander named Heinz-Wilhelm Eck did exactly what US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth ordered US military forces to do - kill the survivors of a destroyed boat at sea.

Now, as then, this is considered a War Crime.

In 1945, Commander Eck was tried, found guilty […]

One bit of NZ culture that I love is the choccy fish reward for good deeds or accomplishment. It’s recognition without great expense or expectation to reciprocate. And they are yummy. https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/22-11-2025/its-a-currency-how-did-chocolate-fish-become-our-default-reward
‘It’s a currency’: How did chocolate fish become our go-to reward?

I'm surprised there isn't something like TCAS (aircraft collision avoidance) for ships that makes use of AIS position reports. This looks like a promising, if somewhat buzzword-heavy, start.

I hope the mandatory AI training for Australian public servants concentrates on the potential negatives and doesn't upsell the "benefits". Unbridled use of automation hasn't worked out so well for the Australian public in the past. https://www.governmentnews.com.au/ai-training-for-aps-staff/
Mandatory AI training for APS
**Every public servant is to receive mandatory training to use artificial intelligence.** The government has developed an AI Plan for the Australian Public Service, which sets out how the APS can harness the technology to “improve service delivery, policy outcomes, and productivity”. “This plan ensures that every public servant will have training and access to generative AI tools,” Finance Minister Katy Gallagher said. “Generative AI provides us with the means to improve public services, make it easier for people and businesses to interact with government, and to help manage employee workloads.” Implementation of the plan will be led jointly by the Department of Finance, the Digital Transformation Agency, and the Australian Public Service Commission. However, individual agencies will remain responsible for their own adoption and use of AI. Under the plan, Australia’s 185,000 public servants will receive: * training to use GenAI tools safely and effectively * access to GenAI tools * clear guidance on how to use these tools responsibly * leadership and support from chief AI officers to promote adoption * opportunities to collaborate, build on and reuse work of others. “This requires support at a whole-of-APS level, within and between organisations, and for individuals,” says the government. The AI plan is structured around three pillars: * people – uplifting performance across the APS while remaining conscious of the impact change has on people * capability – expanding access to secure, fit-for-purpose AI technologies * trust – building confidence through transparency, ethical use, and strong governance. Gallagher said maintaining public trust “will be critical” to the successful adoption of the new technology. “The plan affirms the clear policies and guidance that exist for public servants, ensuring that AI will be used safely and responsibly” and sets out a commitment “to engage openly and constructively to ensure the introduction of AI across the APS is transparent, inclusive, and well-managed”. The plan will be backed by new skills and training, and consultation with APS employees and unions, Gallagher said. “We will provide meaningful avenues for input so staff are supported through ongoing change as we together build a more capable and future-ready public service.” In response, the Community and Public Sector Union said it will be working closely with government and agencies to make sure the commitments set out in the plan “are a reality in practice”. “The government has set a clear expectation that agencies and departments meaningfully consult with their staff and unions as AI tools are introduced. This consultation is not optional – it must start now and be ongoing,” CPSU National Secretary Melissa Donnelly said. Despite assurances that people won’t be replaced by technology, the union “remains concerned about potential job losses and their impact on services and public sector workers,” said Donnelly. Workers must feel secure in their jobs, “now and into the future”, she added. “CPSU will be holding agencies and the government to account every step of the way.” Like this news?
