Fun update to the Frank Black Friday story: I was at Newbury Comics for Record Store Day this morning, and look what I found in the sale bin

From the Wikipedia entry for the Beatles’ “Rain.” Can someone with recording studio experience tell me if this is now a common practice? Because it sounds like it was a technical decision reached after taking way too many drugs

Happy 80th birthday to Neil Young, a guy who’s always done things his own way. Trailblazer, rule breaker, guitar slinger, absolute legend.

11/11 isn’t just Veterans Day. It’s also Power Pop Day - Andy Partridge and Marshall Crenshaw were both born on this day in 1953

The Rock and Roll HoF is a pretty silly concept so I’m generally indifferent to it, but I can’t help feeling thrilled that Warren Zevon is finally in. If you’re not familiar with his work beyond Werewolves of London, I urge you to dig into his catalog, which is overflowing with incredible songs

I’m all for people reading books whenever and wherever possible, but during a high school marching band competition seems odd

Perfect album, no skips? This one right here. Every song is spectacular. Also, as I pointed out to a friend the other day: incredible guitar work throughout. That doesn’t get mentioned often enough with this record

John Coltrane was born on this day in 1926. Paul Weller said these words to me when I interviewed him for PopMatters last year:

I like Kevin Pollak but there has to be a legal limit to how many times you can tell a story about being on the set of “A Few Good Men”

Took my son to his very first concert tonight: Mary Halvorson at Regattabar in Cambridge. Stunning.

The final line of dialogue in “Sneakers” is a wonderfully sick lefty burn, no doubt co-signed enthusiastically by Redford
September 16, 2025 at 2:42 PM
Heartbroken by the loss of Redford, an icon in the truest sense of the word. Also, I’m genuinely thrilled that so many social media posts are mentioning “Sneakers.” If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s a delight. I mean, look at this cast, for crying out loud
