Spotted caramel apple empanada on self-service screen at Taco Bell this week. Mentioned to cashier that it was cruel for fans since it was discontinued in 2019. She said it was back for a limited time a few weeks ago and is now gone again. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS? Bluesky peeps, you failed me. 😭 🥟

Though liberal criticism of American Eagle’s “great jeans” ads did increase over time, it didn’t rise until prominent conservative figures attacked liberals for their supposed outrage. Further, a larger share of posts discussing the ads that also claimed the ads echoed bigoted ideologies were represented on alt-platforms with predominantly conservative communities than those without, indicating that the claims were more popular with conservative critics of liberals than with liberals themselves. More often, our researchers found, ad-related posts contained terms related to looser forms of political identity—a dynamic that was more commonly found on alt-platforms hosting predominantly conservative communities as well.

Worth reading the full transcript, but these two sections in the Emmanuel Macron speech at the Atlantic Council stood out to me.
And let me first say, but it was perfectly phrased by my predecessors here, that you can be a global leader, deeply rooted. And you can believe in patriotism and defend your country without being a nationalist. And this is a big difference. And the big difference is that being full of patriotism makes you loving your country, but without attacking the others. Which is the main difference with a nationalist guy. And this is why I’m here in front of you as a clear patriotic for France, but as a strong advocate for Europe, and a strong believer in global cooperation and in this global order. I don’t want my democracy to be driven by an algorithm whose unique purpose is to create this excitement and to spread crazy contents, because it’s just killing the possibility of a common discussion. It’s just pushing people to the extremes. It’s just killing our common approach of a common world and a shared world. And it’s just framing our democracies in favor of the extremes. Our democracies are at risk because we are too naïve with something which is quite well organized. So let me tell you that if we want to be efficient and remain democracies speaking about democratic values in a few years’ time in this room, we should act. And we should regulate. And the regulation of social network is not a bad word. This is just necessity.

LOVED Dolly Parton's "Threads: My Songs in Symphony" show tonight. ISO sounded fantastic. Guest band members and vocalists were stellar.

Dolly's taped pieces were warm, sweet, and funny. I'll never hear "Jolene" again without imagining her husband Carl as an "ass" at "fault." 😉

If I were a psychologist, I'd see this quip as blending extraversion and possible narcissistic traits—blunt humor that centers his own safety, showing self-focus and low empathy for others. There has been ample discussion about how challenging a stagflation-like environment is for the Fed. As it focuses on cutting rates to stop more layoffs, it runs the risk of higher inflation or some sort of AI bubble forming, reminiscent of the dot-com era. But there’s an equally complex situation in a bifurcated “K-shaped economy” where the top is thriving and the rest are barely staying afloat. Or, in the business context, where AI-related businesses are thriving and many other sectors, such as real estate, farming and manufacturing, are struggling. Which groups are policymakers going to help?

This moment of tension feels like it rhymes with so many other periods of discord in American history, but it isn't quite repeating them. Yes, American history is full of anger and conflict — but I'm not sure this country's social and political systems were always so quick to reward the companies and people who stoke those emotions. Meanwhile the United States will get weaker, not greater. Former Defence Secretary Bob Gates once told me that the three greatest threats to America's national security were a rising China, a declining Russia and the country's own internal divisions. America's adversaries certainly know how much its divisions damage this superpower. They work hard online to drive people further apart. And Americans make it easy for them.
