If the journalism industry and journalists want to rebuild trust, we need to listen to the public 🤝

And they want the news to be regulated by a truly independent regulator, a survey from
@yougov.co.uk and the @prpanel.bsky.social has found.

This can no longer be dismissed as simply being a case of a few bad apples.

A statement from Impress after News Group Newspapers and Prince Harry reached a settlement.

How can the public trust an industry where invasions of privacy and coverups remain commonplace? Having previously attempted to deny and deflect any wrongdoing, News Group Newspapers have now admitted to serious intrusion, phone hacking, misuse of private information and unlawful activities carried out by private investigators for the Sun and the News of the World against Prince Harry. It is incredibly disheartening that, during a period when the Sun and NGN could have carried out in-depth reviews and implemented changes to ethical practices of their journalists, they chose to litigate instead. Prince Harry is in the privileged position of being able to afford to take a media giant like NGN to court and get an apology. The vast majority of the public, however, in a similar position would have been financially ruined by taking a similar course of action. This can no longer be dismissed as being the case of a few bad apples; self-regulation of the press has failed. Effective and truly independent regulation is the only way to stop these unethical practises which have been commonplace across the industry. Impress holds its publishers to the highest standards in journalism and provides accessible avenues to justice for all. Without rigorous and transparent accountability, the world of journalism risks surrendering public trust forever.

The world’s online spaces are in need of strong interventions in order to tackle the explosion of mis- and disinformation we have seen. We are therefore disappointed to learn of Meta’s decision to withdraw factcheckers as a tool to combat mis- and disinformation from its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, and replace them with unproven methods. But this is the predictable result of platforms doing the bare minimum for years to reduce harm on their services, and with new regulations in the UK and EU failing to effectively address the issue of misinformation, self-regulatory standards were always likely to take a nosedive. The issue of online mis- and disinformation, however, remains an urgent blight on society and one that has serious real-world impacts on individuals and communities. More needs to be done to tackle it and Impress remains open and willing to work with anyone who shares this vision.
