Born in the German city of Breslau, in Lower Silesia (now Wroclaw in Poland), Roth died in Inverness, aged 90.

He joined @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social in 1966 and remained there until his retirement. He was appointed a Fellow in 1999.

He made fundamental contributions to different areas of number theory, including Diophantine approximation, the large sieve, irregularities of distribution and arithmetic combinatorics.

He was elected to membership of the London Mathematical Society in 1951 and awarded the De Morgan Medal in 1983.
