Great find! Is that why you were late for our lab group meeting? I am suprised you turned up at all. I wouldn't have! For future reference - finding rarities is an 100% acceptable excuse for missing meetings:-)

That will be Great Spooted Woodpecker - the Lesser Spotted Woidpecker's larger cousin. They're doing OK in the UK too. Lesser Spotted don't occur in Ireland
