‘What does the war in Ukraine mean for us?’ brings together scholars in Slavonic and East European studies, as well as the broader modern languages community, to reflect on how Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is reshaping our field. How can we as scholars respond? How are current methodologies being tested and repurposed, and what new paradigms are emerging? The war poses a challenge not only to those working directly on Ukraine and Russia, but across modern languages and the humanities as a whole; it raises fundamental questions about the post-Cold War era and the critical tools we use to understand it, including transnational and decolonial approaches. The event serves as a launch for a special issue of Forum for Modern Language Studies dedicated to these questions.
