Yeah not sure why it says default value is 16, and described behaviour with first / subsequent boots seems a bit confusing. But regardless I would probably just use 1 at all times!

I wouldn’t use codes in 2025. There were some problems with vnodes (see jolynch.github.io/pdf/cassandr...) that we can address now that metadata is transactional and we’re off gossip. But if you do use vnodes use some low number.
