So it's the lack of through-fare that is working against it? Characters don't seem to have coherent motivation and can change on a whim to fit the story being told? And lack of consistency in the big picture as well? Are these naturally occurring aspects of a show which is about transformation?

Can you highlight more specific elements or examples of "muddy mess"? I'm not really a Dr Who Watcher, but I'd be interested in getting an idea about what makes an episodic anthology show muddy
