Day in, day out, we see a fifth to a quarter of Crown Court courtrooms standing idle. And yet practitioners are running themselves ragged trying (and failing) to keep up. The backlog grows ever higher, overseen by a government with no remediation plan at all.

Today the government will deliver some warm words about criminal justice. Today the DPP slammed the unacceptable backlog as the worst he has ever seen. Unless they fix the courts and the retention and recruitment of those who work in them, anything they say is meaningless.
