Jomei stepped closer. One pace. Then another. I didn't move. The distance closed between us, quiet and inevitable. When he reached me, he raised a hand, slow enough to give me the choice, and touched the side of my face. Bare fingers. Gentle. Unwelcome. Necessary. And I let him. I hated the stillness that followed. Hated the heat of his hand. Hated that my body didn't tense the way it should have. His thumb brushed beneath my eye and my jaw clenched hard. His skin was too warm, too alive, and then he leaned in just enough for the words to reach me as breath. "You already know what I want to say. But you're not ready to hear it. Don't let them win just because you're tired of breathing." He stepped back before I could react. My hand twitched and I forced myself to inhale. The ghost of his fingers burned along my cheek as he walked on silent feet back to the door. His lithe form swayed in the gloom, moving with the same unnatural grace I would know anywhere, even in the dark. "And try not to die before I get the chance to hate you properly," he said as he put his hand on the door handle. "Don't leave the candle burning," I said. Familiar words, familiar phrases. Jomei paused. And when he looked back, it was with that same crooked, secretive smile that always made my heart beat a fraction off pace. He'd brought many a man to their knees when he smiled like that. "You know I always will," he said. The door closed with a soft sigh behind him. chapter 5, Worn in Silence

Out of curiosity, I compiled the chapters I have written and put it on my paperwhite just to see what it felt like as a finished novel. The result actually made me super emotional and now I'm going to leave it on there for motivation.
