The conservative desire to ‘be the counterculture’ is so funny to me: guess how many divisions the writers at n plus one or the baffler command. None! The people who write for cool art mags & curate trendy galleries are far close to me than the median voter, & it does *nothing*, we lose all the time

Mary Beard's: SPQR book goes over this topic pretty thoroughly. It varied across Roman history but most of the educated elite thought the stories didn't literally happen but had elements of the truth in them.
