Alternatively, perhaps it would be possible to create a general account for all your students moving forward? That way they wouldn't each need to create it for themselves.

At this point, unfortunately not. We made the choice to set the group as private so that we could also include PDFs, since we anticipate many of the papers as being hard-to-find. If the group was public, then including PDFs would be difficult.
