Now, some other possible headlines that would fit same space, match just as well with the data in the piece, and convey an entirely different impression. And—my opinion— say more about what the realities actually are.

Alan was director of LIDS when I was a postdoc there. I never had any formal student/advisory relationship with him, but he was always super generous with his time and insights, and happy to sit down and talk through ideas. Such a great mentor!

Of course, the process is imperfect in many ways. But it still provides a useful and egalitarian service when done in good faith by all parties (authors, reviewers, editors/ACs).
