I don’t think you’re nostalgic for recording songs off the radio, respooling unwound tapes with a pen(cil) downloading songs off Limewire, or burning mix CDs. I think what you ARE nostalgic for is your initial, youthful connection to music, & the free time which allowed you to pursue that.

I see a lot of pearl clutching about Skibidi Toilet and “brain rot YouTube,” but I wonder: is this stuff ANY worse for kids than the half-hour animated toy ads that got pushed on my generation every Saturday morning for most of the 80s?

I’d somehow made it to middle age without ever once seeing “It’s A Wonderful Life,” which I finally watched last weekend. Incredible filmmaking, and yes the ending is beautiful & uplifting, but DAMN is there a lot of loss, trauma, & grief along the way. It’s almost unbearably sad at points!

Forget vinyl, CD, or streaming. I now release my music straight to landfill, which is to say that as soon as my album is done, I copy the session and master files to their own SSD, and place that directly in the trash.

Social media has rewired a lot of people’s brains, to the point where they can’t handle positivity or kindness - they can only get their dopamine hit from toxicity. I believe this because I was in danger of becoming one of those people!
