At school in English lit we had to critique books, historical docs, etc. I couldn't just write "shallow and superficial", or "fails to accurately represent" whatever. Frau Albers demanded why, how; explain using 'constructive criticism'. I see little of that lesson in response to this article.

In the '60s & '70s that's the advice in most every book on writing. When a couple of days had passed and I wrote squat, the guilt of not living up to the "quota" actual suppressed the creativity. Today I write when the spirit awakens. It may be pages or just a paragraph but it's good.
