Canadian citizens and residents, there's a new official parliamentary petition raising the issue of electoral reform and proportional representation. Signing is a direct means of meaningful action toward improving our democracy, and it just takes a moment to do. www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en...

Awful year for whooping cough. Important:

1) Vaccination during (every!) pregnancy helps drastically reduce risk of infant developing serious disease

2) Vaccination for infant on schedule

3) Vaccination of those around infant. Protects individuals from serious disease & reduces transmission risk
Pertussis in infants is terrifying but it’s not just the cough.

It’s the fact that babies literally STOP BREATHING.

~2/3 of infants hospitalized have apnea (life threatening pauses in breathing)

Vaccination starts at 2 mo so it’s important EVERYONE is immunized to protect our littlest ones.

Your intermittent reminder that RIPMedicalDebt is an organization that does great things.

ripmedicaldebt.org

You donate, say, $10 and they buy and erase $1000 of someone's medical debt.

At this point I'm working from the assumption that my finalist position for the Best Novel Hugo award last year is ill-gotten and taking the place that should have gone to a Chinese title and author, and don't really have a problem saying so.
New blog post: some thoughts on how recent disclosures reveal that the Hugo scandal is something very different - and much worse- than what we thought, and about how the Worldcon membership can demand accountability.
The 2023 Hugo Awards: Somehow, It Got Worse
The last month has been a busy one in Hugo and Worldcon fandom. After the shock of the much-belated 2023 nominating stats, and their revelat...

When I moderate panels (or do my own events) I always preface Q&A time with 3 rules:

1. Questions must be in the form of a question

2. Questions must be one part questions

3. Questions must be as short as possible

Because that way we can get more questions in.

I cut people off if they ignore.
Do read Kate Watson's post for the numbers on male domination of panel Q&As, and the easy adjustments moderators can make to prevent it.

I live in hope for the moderator who, when someone starts,

'This is more of a comment than a question'

says 'Actually no, let's move onto the next question'.
Whenever I do a talk/panel I always ask the moderator to make sure the first Q&A comes from a woman/fem-presenting person

That more than doubles the chance that other women will be asked, subsequently, whereas if the 1st is a man, men dominate the Q&A.

Mods are always surprised, but usually try it

With the latest Bluesky rollout, your skeets are now visible to anyone on the web. If you want to change this, you need to go to the Moderation tab in user settings and, confusingly, toggle the “Logged-out visibility” button ON.

Thank goodness Darth reposted the smosh potato cus making this for Christmas potluck
the smosh potato is less of a recipe and more of a technique for getting a potato with a creamy center and cronchy edges
there are many ways to make these such as boiling and pan frying or roasting and deep frying but here is one that uses just one cookie sheet and a ziploc bag for minimal cleanup

This is that premium East German shit, where everyone is afraid of everyone else and they self-police and the grubbiest, shittiest little people get to wield the power of the state at whim. Great choices.
Missouri HB.1739 contains provisions for the immediate dismissal and 4 year suspension from employment for any nurse, teacher or social worker who calls a student a name other than that which is on their school registration forms, or fails to report a non-cis identity.

Every time someone suggests that LLM "AI" might have something to say on moral questions, I remember the season three episode of Voyager where the Doctor adds a bunch of context-free information to his program and winds up turning into a serial killer.
