I teach, I watch tv, I mom.
@mmasnick.bsky.social Did you ever get a copy of the study, mentioned on the October 16 Control-Alt-Speech podcast, about social media's effect on the cognitive skills of children? I got a copy of it and I'm wondering if you did and what you think of it.

Look what arrived today! Can't wait to try it out! I'm hoping to figure out how to play it with my New Media class this semester (can 18 people play at once?). @mmasnick.bsky.social

A former GOP regular on my show was incensed at Biden’s use of the term “MAGA Republican” and said it was the most divisive thing he ever heard a president say.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

Columbia canceled my class on Race and Media, but I'm teaching it anyway.

All thanks to people power and community support-- especially from you all on Bluesky!

Happy to announce I'll be teaching Race Media and International Affairs 101 online-- hosted by D.C.'s MLK Jr. Memorial Library!

Sounds like the prostate cancer my father had, and he lived 4+ years after diagnosis. While on dialysis most of that time.

Poker Face season 2 launches TODAY on Peacock! It’s a case-of-the-week episodic show, an ode to stuff like Columbo, Rockford… fun guest stars each week, truly episodic so you can pretty much drop into any episode. No heavy lifting, just a good time every time. Share & enjoy!

Musk states "the fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy". Charles Darwin, who actually researched this stuff, showed it was empathy, specifically, that enabled humanity to flourish.

All of these nomination hearings in a nutshell:

Congress: “Will you break the law if the President tells you to?”

Nominee: “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”

There are so many awful things/people Mullin supports (like Hegseth), so maybe talk about that instead of making fun of his name. It's childish.
how many senators have two normal names scrunched into one in an embarrassing way
Markwayne Mullin: "Senator Kaine, or I guess I better use the senator from Virginia, starts bringing up the fact that 'what if you showed up drunk to your job?' How many senators have shown up drunk to vote at night? ... how many senators have gotten a divorce for cheating?"

Me: When I was picking up the car at the dealer's, I saw a cool dog! It was a Cairn Terrier/Corgi mix and it looked like a Cairn Terrier with Corgi legs!
Son: Was the dog buying a car?

When Joseph McCarthy was wandering around wrecking people's lives, the State Department purged most of its experts on China, which meant most of its experts on east Asia other than Japan. This meant that the government was largely flying blind when deciding whether to get involved in Vietnam.
Nothing to worry about here, just a political purge of our national security apparatus that will replace long-serving experts with dimwitted bootlickers.

I'm sure our safety and security won't be impacted at all.
READ THIS.

THEN READ IT AGAIN.

Sometimes I start a crappy mini-series based on a crappy book, and then I get the crappy book and read it in an hour or so just so I can find out who the bad guy is before the crappy mini-series is over.
When I do this, I never add the crappy book to my Goodreads. No one needs to know what I did.

This is vile. One of the right's biggest current stars is attacking sign-language interpreters literally because he doesn't like the way they look. And, of course, he's doing it without putting in a minute of work to grasp the differences in the ways deaf people use ASL, lip reading, and captions.
🔊 PSA for nondisabled people 🔊

It's time to step the FUCK up if you wanna be an ally.

ASL interpretation is being targeted by right wing cry baby douchebags.

Shut this shit down when you see it. SPEAK UP. This barrage of ASL hate is heavier than usual.

My brother has been a wildfire fighter for 10+ years. His top safety advice to me has always been to be the first one on the road. It's doubly true with 0% containment and LA traffic. If you're thinking of evacuating, and your gut is telling you that you'll need to, don't wait for the order. Leave.

Solid needle-drops (California Stars!!!) , and I'm glad they resisted the temptation to use Hello In There.
