this is my periodic reminder that the roadside geology series goes SO hard, the out-of-print virginia edition in particular

With Roadside Geology of Virginia, I hope to give you an answer to this question. And even where no hill rises to view, I try to tell you a story about the history of bedrock beneath pavement you are driving along and scenery you are looking at while traveling. Only some rocks in Virginia stand out in stark relief above roadways, but all have a story to tell you who are curious about landscapes around you. For hidden beneath a cover of vegetation and soil is bedrock and each piece of that bedrock has a geologic history. But most soil is residual in that it represents a decay product of bedrock residing at depth. Hence, even dirt in a fresh excavation can tell you something about the history of ground around it. Pete Seeger understood something fundamental about humans and music, which is that many people can't sing on key, but all crowds can. Even without rehearsal, public choirs can be stunning to listen to and thrilling to be part of. And he believed that everyone should do it, that people should retain the ability to get in a room and sing, because it was good for you, and because it taught people to pitch in and be brave.
