Bitter Irony of the Day:

The forest burning in California right now was used as an off-set by the fossil fuel industry. #ParkFire

Media coverage on the role of climate change in the record-breaking deluge and flood that hit Florida yesterday is spotty - at best (see Hill Heat). But the worst reporting might be from USA Today which was silent on the connection, instead quoting a resident blaming more asphalt for growing floods.

To honor my mother, Dona Mae, in memoriam on Mother's Day, I just donated to the National Bail Out Mother's Day campaign to bail out "as many Black Mamas and caregivers as we can so they can spend Mother’s Day with their families where they belong!"

You can, too: www.nationalbailout.org

One clarification to this otherwise excellent AP story:

The definition of 1.5°C of warming as a *long-term* elevation of temperatures (instead of just one year) is NOT just a "technical" distinction.

Emily Grubert brings the receipts!
Earlier this year I (with Frances Sawyer) published a paper suggesting the 45Q CCS tax credit is structured in a way that could incentivize huge costs + increased GHG emissions from the US power sector.
DOE rebutted it, and we were allowed to reply. Those pieces are up today:

COPs are such a complicated evil necessity (if only because they reflect the world).

Still, a lot of the "good stuff" gets released at COP, much of it is lost in hullabaloo. The media can only channel so much.

Anyways, here is one good one:

Looking ahead, the Biden Administration is arguing that the next wave of LNG export terminals are needed to help Europe, but by the time those terminals are built, Europe will already be far along with the gas-to-renewables energy transition.
Surprise, surprise, surprise...the new LNG export terminals approved by the Biden Administration don't want to sell Europe after all. They want to be war profiteers selling on the spot market (i.e. Asia).

This past summer of hell in Texas demonstrated that gas-fired power breaks down in extreme heat.

This follows the break down during winter storms.

Far from being "firm and dispatchable," gas-fired power often breaks down when it's needed most.

Backgrounder here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Texas voters approved low-interest loans that would, in practice, go only to gas fired power.

However, the cheap loans may not be enough to make new gas-fired power plants competitive with solar/wind/battery storage.

Another county wakes up to the "existential threat" of sea level rise and is planning a massive sea wall w/ gates, running south from the San Francisco Airport. I doubt Exxon is going to pay for it. Adding insult to injury, it looks like an ecological disaster

A good indicator of the true economics for gas-fired power?

Even when limited to serving as a back-up power source, gas-fired power increasingly can't compete with battery storage powered by solar/wind.

No Virginia, "energy security to meet climate goals" does NOT require "a continued call for US Gas Production growth" despite what the new Wood Mackenzie report says. Just check the IPCC Working Group III report which found that global gas production must ⬇️ by a LOT.

Another satellite study documenting that methane emissions in the USA are far higher than what the U.S. reports to the rest of the word. Brutally hypocritical for a country that talks a LOT in climate negotiations about the need for "transparency."

It’s not just the carbonistas who run this double standard, Integrated Assessment Models consistently project that the cost of capture will fall, despite no such track record, while projecting that the cost of renewables will flatline, despite being proved wrong every year for maybe 15 years now.
Meanwhile, much of the same crowd that tells us carbon capture is a solution goes batty at activists calling for 100% renewable energy. They act like that’s impractical while all the mainstream scenario planning has a just massive assumption on future carbon removal.

The bath tub model for carbon pollution rises up once again in this PolicyCrisis essay. As a *mental* model it’s very limited. Any metaphor that needs explaining (as this does) doesn’t get traction in public comms. Plus.....1/n

Going forward, this year will rank as one of the coldest years on record. From here on out, temperatures will only keep rising until all carbon pollution is stopped.

Industry argues that gas-fired power is needed to back up renewables because wind and solar are intermittent. But this analysis shows that battery storage is a better alternative because gas-fired power plants can't handle all the cycling up and down:
