Marine scientist & Head of Environmental Div. at MFRI Iceland. Seeking a social world with civil and informed discussions and debates, kindness and humor. Very much hoping for a useful platform for sharing updates on scientific activities and discoveries
I'm a bit proud of our country sometimes. One of my proudest moments came in 2009 when an openly #gay female got elected priminister. No one gave any thought about her being female gay, exept the foreign media. Go #diversity Go #LGBTQ #iceland 🇮🇸 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️
Iceland has a female President, female Prime Minister, female Minister of Justice, female Foreign Secretary, female Chief of Police, a female Bishop, female Mayor of Reykjavík (the capitol) and the biggest political parties are led by women.

But still there is a pay gap and gendered violence.

Our natural systems are changing fast. Anti-science attitude and policies are an embarrassment to the human earth population at this stage. There is screaming evidence for climate change, and we know it will hurt.
While all of this is happening to our scientific agencies, the current extent of sea ice globally remains at record low levels...

How I hope that 2025 people will leave X behind and join Bluesky (or whatever) instead. The power that comes with owning a social media platform comes with poeple using it.

In recognition of us doing fuck all to reduce emissions, let me remind y'all that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.

Carbon dioxide removal is not a current climate solution — we need to change the narrative
Drastically reduce emissions first, or carbon dioxide removal will be next to useless.

In thinking about what rich nations owe the developing world, here’s something to keep in mind:

The average American emits more CO₂ in one week than an average person in low-income countries does in one year.

Joining Bluesky feels like showing up for a fun party full of interesting people and even more showing up (or flowing in). Hope we have stumbled on to something good here...
