Scintillation is a small convention in Montreal in June, focused on reading and writing SF and fantasy. It is a lot of fun, and all people of goodwill who like reading and talking about books are welcome. Membership for 2026 is now open

Today I learned that Burnaby, BC had municipal bylaws that "prohibited the employment of Chinese and Japanese workers by the municipality or its contractors" and restricted "people of Chinese descent from owning land" until yesterday.

In celebration of World Octopus Day, we wanted to revisit one of our favorite cephalopod sightings, the glass octopus — Vitreledonella richardi filmed during a month-long #PhoenixIslandsCoral expedition in 2021.

I saw a thing the other day that basically said “no matter what prompt you give it, the question an LLM is answering is ‘what would a plausible response to this prompt look like?’”

james surowiecki has discovered where the completely fabricated trump tariff rate has come from for each country

"...for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us."

Just bought Cross Fire by @fondalee.bsky.social on sale for $1.99 from Google Play books. For how much I loved the Green Bone saga, there was no good excuse for this book to be missing from my library. Can't wait to read it!

At risk of repeating myself: The Luddites weren’t against technology. They were against getting put out of work by a technology that did a version of their job faster but worse, in the service of increasing profits for their bosses.

When I buy a book because it's on sale and then another book because it's such a deal, and then another... my husband says "Is this story going to end up with you trading the cow for magic beans?"

But you really can buy the whole Small Change series ebooks for $7.97

When Animorphs ended, fans were vocal about how they didn't like the depressing ending.

K.A. Applegate responded with amongst the most brutal letters I've read.

It takes a generational talent to tell your fans "If you're mad at me because that's what you have to take away from Animorphs, too bad."

I really, really do not talk about the RWA thing a lot, and unless you were there before people knew what the RWA thing was, you probably don’t know this part of the story.

(Everyone in Romancelandia probably already knows this part of the story.)
and none of those pieces are being written by people who understand how that level of constant abuse CHANGES you

it’s not a mere tedious cleanup process, blocking today’s round of trolls just like sorting out the junk mail from the bills and birthday cards

it does not live on you that lightly
The thing that keeps getting me about all the pieces fretting about Bluesky being too insular is that the argument seems to be that those of us who are most likely to be abused by the right (BIPOC people, trans people, queer people, etc) must put up with being abused for the sake of public discourse

In warm climates, even relatively dry air can hold a lot of water - and a recently developed solar-powered hydropanel can extract it. One panel costs ~$2,000, should last at least 15 years, and can provide 4-5 L of drinking water per day. #ShareGoodNewsToo t.co/TPhGJZiV1j
How our drinking water could come from thin air
From solar panels that produce water to 'self-filling' coffee machines and water coolers, technology companies are putting a new spin on a centuries-old technique.
