On Monday, City Council shot down a rezoning request from Black business owners who wanted to have events in a building on Chatham Rd. A group of angry nearby white homeowners who used racist dog whistles about boisterous clubs and their (white) daughters being at risk.

The proposed location of a new amphitheater next to Crystal Towers will increase the risk of violence against our most marginalized residents. Look what's happening already. Imagine how quick police will crack heads of whoever they feel doesn't belong on the public land they wish to steal from us 😡

Yesterday, we closed on a renovation loan that will help us make the Spring Street Co-op HIGH-QUALITY and TRULY AFFORDABLE housing for residents who will own this building with no landlords!

Here (left to right), managing member Dan, treasurer Phil, and board member Dee celebrate the closing 🥳

Don Flow and his cronies want to pay $1 a month for 8 publicly-owned parcels of land downtown. They tell us they'll build an amphitheater at no cost to the public. But parking, traffic, safety, and noise burdens will be borne by residents while the owners of the proposed venue rake in profits.

Victory! A month-long campaign by Housing Justuce Now has won free bus service in extreme temps! The WSTA began offering it on July 25th, and under pressure from tenants across the city, City Council made it a permanent policy at their August 4th meeting. Organizing gets the goods, y'all. Join HJN!

It's been brutally hot this past week in Winston-Salem. So, with some relief, from July 26 - July 30, we enjoyed the free bus rides that we've been demanding since the beginning of summer. WSTA reinstated fares yesterday as temperatures fell slightly, but we can't stop fighting for our community 🌹

Winston-Salem, come get these free bus rides again today (until 7 p.m.)!

Community organizing works!

🚌 RIDE THAT THANG, WINSTON-SALEM 🚌
WSTA buses are free today during the heat advisory thanks to the work of community organizers who fought for it!

We are excited to keep building this thing! 🏘⚖️

Chump change. WSTA collected an estimated $943,909 in fares over the past year. Will the city continue to jeopardize public health with something they could easily make free?
July 11, 2025 at 12:20 PM
Winston-Salem makes life miserable for those who need public transportation: reinstituting fares suspended at the start of the pandemic, cutting bus lines, and criminalizing people trying to survive at the bus station. Transit justice is housing justice, and we won't stop until our city does right.

📣 We've got you surrounded! Put down the corporate giveaways, and hand over the meager amount of funds necessary to make buses free during heat emergencies!

While heat index values reach 107°F this week, many residents cannot get to cooling stations or other places they need to go due to lack of bus fare. We demand free Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) bus service during this extreme heat.
