5. James—Caledonian Railway 903 Class

Like I said, this is meant to be for fun. I love the idea of a Scottish James. Plus, at this size, he’s more of a Big Engine.

Is that counterintuitive to his character? Yes. Do I care? No, this is for fun.

4. Gordon—Only Basic Changes

Gordon’s basis for his history is perfect as is. Just let him keep his 8-wheel tender and stock frames. Do with the third cylinder and valve gear what you must.

3. Post-Rebuild Henry—Black 5 PACIFIC

IDK how else to say it but I really wish Henry had been rebuilt into a 4-6-2 while still being basically a Black 5. Help him stay unique. I don’t see why Stanier wouldn’t agree to whip one up for Topham.

2. Edward—LNER D25

Old 4-4-0, rounded-top boiler with a history of banking duties.

1. Thomas—GCR Class 7

It’s short and stumpy, has 6 wheels and inside cylinders, and is a lot like Awdry’s initial model without having to be a J50. We’ll say the lads at Crovan’s Gate made some cuts in his tanks to get at his valve gear and gave him a bigger bunker.

“Cringeee,” said Thomas.

2. With credit to mean-scarlet-deceiver!

Emily was an original GNR engine, and survived because she was kept as spare parts for No. 1. That engine, Patricia, refused to take them to help Emily’s chances of restoration. And so she was, after decades of idleness.

1. Per “The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways,” the NWR had some eighty locomotives of their own in 1987.

Effective 2024, the number is now one-hundred and seven…ish.
