My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

Overall Biden was a great president but his two major mistakes that are having disastrous consequences for the world was not arming Ukraine to the teeth to be aggressive against Russia and not prosecuting Trump to the fullest extent possible.
Ukraine already tried giving up land for Russia’s word to stop attacking, with the Minsk Agreements of 2014-15. Russia violated them with a full scale invasion in 2022.

Why would Ukraine think land for peace would work this time, especially when a Putin-sympathetic US won’t do security guarantees?
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says that if Ukraine takes the right steps, its GDP could surpass Russia’s within 10 years.

"They are literally fighting over a 30-50 km strip in Donetsk, roughly 20% of the region still under Ukrainian control and now a central issue in negotiations."

I think this is my best essay on this topic (maybe my best essay). I'd like you to read it, if you haven't.
It also means (@lollardfish.bsky.social has ably written about this) that you as a parent are forced to concentrate on and narrate your child's difficulties just to get them what they need, which is damaging to your child and your relationship with them.

My poll question would be 'Should @castanetkamloops.net stop wasting digital ink on dumb divisive ideas from a fringe party that didn't exist when its MLAs were elected?'.

I'm watching the Vegas-Chicago NHL game and Carter Hart is playing and I'm thinking some messed up journalist is going to nominate him for the Bill Masterton trophy awarded for perseverance in the face of adversity. That's how pathetic the hockey community is.

“I just have concerns about fairness in sport”… okay and so let’s close every sport academy, ban travel sports below the age of 13, and ban paid coaches for youth sports if we’re all so concerned about “fairness”
“I just have concerns about fairness in sport” - no, you don’t. There’s nothing fair about elite sports. You’re just looking for post hoc justification because we give you the ick

What is wild to me is that a lot of people are talking about the second strike as being illegal when the first strike is also illegal.
Bash: "Do you believe if there was a second strike to eliminate any survivors that it constitutes a war crime?"

Mark Kelly: "It seems to."

Bash: "If you received that order, would you have carried it out?"

Mark Kelly: "No…Going after survivors in the water is unlawful."

The whole anti-DEI thing is predicated on making sure that awful people with mediocre talent can still get a better than equal chance to be wealthy, often at the expense of trans people. Riley Gaines was an unremarkable swimming talent that leveraged anti-trans rhetoric to become wealthy
How do people not see that the entire OU essay thing is just an attempt by this girl and the Turning Point chapter to turn her into another Riley Gaines grifting on trying to push trans people out of society?
Here's what this is actually about, dumbass

This might be the most Nelson story ever. Like you could take the name of the town out of the story and ask people where it would take place and most people who know anything about Nelson would say Nelson. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

we have to get out of this framing that the hard right has a point about immigration numbers, but they're saying it in a mean & racist way

even if they weren't racist at all (& they very much are), what they are calling for is still national suicide

I live in the McDonald Park neighbourhood. We haven't had a new sidewalk in 20 years so the least Council could do is invest some money to slow cars down so it's a bit safer for me to walk to the park with my kid. For the $20M we are spending on KCA parking, we could build a lot of sidewalks

The stupid thing about what Carney did is that it will never satisfy Alberta - their political leadership is insatiable so why give in to their whining? Also, from a pure political perspective, it will not gain the Liberals a single seat in Alberta but will definitely lose them several seats in BC.

I'm not interested in "I told you so."

A lot of people voted Liberal because they were terrified of Poilievre and his gang. I get that.

But Carney's who we got, he's being a weak leader, pushing policies that are harming the vast majority of us and it's time to just admit he sucks and push back.

Lots of space for the NDP and Green Party to become nationally relevant again with the direction the Liberals are going.

I will believe in the end of identity politics when steel and lumber (28,000 jobs and 105,000 jobs respectively) stop getting bailouts, while higher education (310,000 jobs) collapses in front of our eyes because it's full of ivory tower elites

Like so much with the mayor, there is often a tiny piece of rationality (e.g. Council should be questioning rising costs and whether it makes sense to pay $20M for parking) surrounded by incomprehensible irrationality (e.g. we should move the arts centre to beside the water treatment plant).
