We all cringe when we see someone call jungle “reggae breakcore” or whatever. But that’s because, in the realm of criticism / discourse, having some shared tenets & understanding of what genres mean and where they come is important. But applying that same standard to your own creativity is limiting

But when you’re DJing? That shit is just for you. It doesn’t have to easily communicate anything to anyone else. Call it “demon Techno” or “underwater breaks” or whatever the hell you want, as long as you know what goes in that folder and what doesn’t

Genres are made up, racially biased, etc — but we still use them & don’t just call everything “genre fluid” because it’s useful to have words that intuitively communicate something about art before you hear / see it (this article really articulates that idea well).

Your impulse is correct. If you were trying to make a satirical show about an evil grifter youtuber, building a theme park in Saudi Arabia and launching a Klarna style financial services / payday loan company at the same time would be noted as "overkill". But that's literally what's happening
