For me in writing it’s all about if the writing works within constraints rather than ignores them - whether that’s age appropriate choices characters make or characters struggling with something that you would need to struggle with. It is not lazy AND makes the payoff better.

Sort of! He is over it by the time this story starts. He has other closer friends so he’s not like alone. And he becomes the older friend to 2 new freshmen!

Not super important but the MMC’s closest friend on the team - he graduated before the start of the story. He may show up in a future iteration of the series!

Over explaining for sure - my first draft had so much scene padding watching the character get to wherever they needed to be for the scene. I still have this issue!
