This has been so frustrating and disappointing to see. If anyone has tremendous influence it’s pharma leaders, all of whom have NIH-funded research to thank for their success. I think it’s fear of retaliation that’s keeping them quiet

And finally, talk to as many people in your network that work in industry as possible. My experience and advice are not universal, and it's best to get as many viewpoints as possible before making such a big decision (7/7)

For the seminar: try not to present your work as a neatly packaged, fully-formed story. The team want to see how you thinka nd what you did in addition to what you learned. Go into some details of the problems that arose during the investigation and your troubleshooting process to solve them (6/7)

During interviews, make sure you have a good narrative as to why you're making the switch - simply saying you don't think things are looking good in the academic sector won't cut it. You have to make a case that you actually WANT to work in pharma/biotech (5/7)

Apply as broadly as possible. For instance, I have expertise in protein science, nucleic acids, biophysics, biochemistry, assay development, and xray/cryo-EM so I applied to positions for all of these subfields (4/7)

Trim your CV down to 2-3 pages and emphasize your skillset rather than your educational pedigree and research areas. Tailor your CV (and cover letter) to the position you're applying for - e.g. if you're applying to a biophysics position, put your biophysical proficiencies front-and-center (3/7)

First off - while it's less work than an academic job hunt, don't assume that finding a position in industry will be easy. The job market is tight and I've talked to many impressive people who've assumed that companies would be fighting over them and were surprised to get very few bites (2/7)
