So, to those who celebrated the ruling last week and see this crucial piece of legislation dropped today, I say, wake up, this now impacts you too.

This vicious attack on trans women is slowing down feminist progress and costing lives. Dividing the feminist movement serves no one. Can’t you see that the problem isn’t trans women? It’s men’s violence against women and the patriarchy. All women have felt that violence throughout their lives.

Never have I seen evidence that shows that trans women are a threat to any one. Yet we see increased reports of rapes, assaults and the murder of women.

Over the last 3 years I’ve chaired the Violence Against Women & Girls partnership, sat on Safe Partnership and the Wellbeing and Equality committee, and had good relations with community policing.

And crucially, it would begin a culture shift, and give women the confidence to be mobile, have independence and feel empowered in their every day lives.

This bill would have criminalised catcalling and street harassment. Would have ensured women and non-binary folk felt safer on public transport. It would criminalise behaviour that causes fear, alarm and degradation.
