Identity and a sense of self are things that have changed throughout cultures and times. They're so incredibly nuanced and varied 😌💜

Usually these are just aspects of an individuals self that remain unattached to any sense of identity or are given sub identity status (like "drunk me" or "angry me"). In some cases the human brain will coalesce those separated aspects of the person into a new self-scheme.

The formation of endogenic headmates doesn't happen just one way, but a common way it does happen is due to how human brains form an internal sense of self (or self-schema). When thoughts, feelings, beliefs, goals, etc don't fit into the current self-scheme, the brain can reject them as "not me".
