People don't understand what is meant by "literacy" and the "literacy crisis".

Literacy isn't just not being able to physically read. Many people know how to see words and say words, which is basic reading. Literacy is being able to infer the correct information from what you read.

New headshots, and a website refresh. Now just waiting on a cover and info for the new book to share with you all.

ALSO I successfully migrated hosts and figured out how to install multiple wordpress instances on the same domain. Now my blog is looking really nice. *dusts off CS degree* ;D

For people who think book banning isn't a big deal because even if they're not available in libraries and schools, you can still buy them--this is an elitist argument. Most kids ONLY have access to books from their library. Libraries ensure info access for all. Libraries are vital in democracies.
It's not a badge of honor when books get banned. It stinks for everyone. For the book creators, who worked hard to create something special that now won't be shared. The kids who miss out. The librarians and teachers who are treated like criminals. And taxpayers who have to pay for this nonsense.

Books aren't expensive.

Writers are at the bottom of a large column of people making money off books.

We get screwed the most.

By the publishing industry and the fucking pirates.

You like books? Buy them, or go to the library.

Or there won't be any writers to make the art.

I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

I have always been transparent bc aspiring writers need to know.

I never quit my day job as a part-time physician. Spouse works full time.

Writing is gig work. Some years are great. Some years are not. There is a lot of hustle and diversifying to keep all the plates spinning.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

The thing I want to stress to people: Authors (and other artists you admire) don't *expect* you to be scintillating when you meet us, so don't worry about being clever. What *is* appreciated is if you're nice. Just be nice! Nice is good!
But what if I say something completely stupid?? My anxiety is too high to speak coherently when meeting an author. The most I can manage is something like "thank you for writing and sharing your work. It has become my friend and I brought it here for you to sign, please." Then I flee.

As someone who reads historical romance and fantasy this was right up my alley!

It has a Georgian-esque world but with blood magic. 👍🏽👍🏽 There’s even a dancing scene!

I really like the Surrey International Writer's Festival. It should be happening right now. But they canceled their event because of the workers who are fighting for a fair deal from the hotel that usually hosts the convention.

It was the right thing to do, but the cost to SIWC was $$$$$. help?

Unsolicited writing advice: no. 8075: There is no such thing as serious writing. There are only writers who take their work seriously, and those who don’t. Tragedy is no more “serious” than comedy. Children’s writing is no less “serious” than writing for adults. Good writing is wherever you find it.
