I questioned Ed Miliband on Monday on how the Govt. could possibly justify airport expansion when aviation has such a detrimental impact on the climate.

Today, the Govt. confirmed their support of Heathrow expansion, flying in the face of their own climate scientists' advice🤦
Rachel Reeves has confirmed the Government supports Heathrow expansion.

Analysis from @neweconomics.bsky.social shows airport expansion is unlikely to result in 'economic growth' and it would blow away the UK's climate commitments.

Who exactly does this benefit?

A single temperature figure is hardly adequate to characterize climate change. The world is already into a "chaotic" phase, where amelioration is needed as more extreme weather phenomena occur. This should not include airport expansion.
This Government is crossing its fingers and praying that electric planes and sustainable fuel will materialise.

We cannot rely on underdeveloped technologies to decarbonise aviation. Ed Miliband knows this.

This is a test of climate credibility, and Labour is failing.

AI is like plastic — a lot of people hate it because it often comes across as fake and tacky, but it’s flexible and it’s cheap and there’s so many things that would be impossible or impractical without it.

And yes, a lot of AI will be junk. Just like everything else. (cf Sturgeon’s Law.)

My intention for the year is to write

2025 A Mathematical Odyssey:

Exuberant excursions into contemporary fields.

50 years ago I embarked on pure mathematics. Perhaps to end up an academic.

That never happened. Now , having "retired" from IT, I can look back, sideways & a little foward.

This is a hilariously written summary of the Tory downfall of 2024, it's equally terrifying that it's all true!

"Liz Truss was like an actor who had been cast in a single episode of Star Trek, and then eked it out into a lifetime of Comic Con appearances."
