I claimed that beneath these debates lie three core assumptions leading us to such philosophical deadlocks: (1) some form of commitment to realism, (2) the autonomy of the special sciences, and (3) some version of functionalism/ multiple realizability. I then addressed these assumptions one by one.

I argued that these axes are formed around how different schools respond to two foundational philosophical problems: the problem of mental causation (Kim, 1989, 1992) and the hard problem of content (Harnad, 1990; Hutto & Myin, 2012).
