So #gamedevs are there any good game design rules about how to distribute your screen real estate? A “rule of thirds” type thing for UI elements vs gameplay?

If I can write out all of the logic for a game in pseudocode, does that make the transition to actually building it easier? Or does my made up syntax and organization actually make it more difficult?
