This is a good article that interrogates the idea of trust in journalism and creators. So many choices in journalism are invisible to readers, from why we choose to write certain stories and and using only parts of quotes for narrative reasons (or concision).

This has always been one of the hardest parts of journalism. You spend a lot of time learning (and being rewarded) for journalism as it was (with important skills like rigorous reporting and writing) then realize maybe that it often isn't relevant to people's lives

This is a good thought. There's been too much focus on the top of the funnel, which has encouraged low quality work and the illusion of value in a pageview. The true value comes after.

I am a great proponent of metrics in newsrooms: I believe they opened the door to cover things and listen to people in the newsroom who had previously been ignored. But it can also go too far. And this essay touches on that.

I remember that day in the newsroom and I remember that story. Quartz was one of the most creative places I ever worked.

This is an incredible loss for The Post. Matea was both a tremendous journalist and manager.
