Mind sets need to change on donating finds to Museums

1 x donated find or reduced cost artefact

Per county

Per year

So Sussex Museums on average have received 10 donated finds in 10 years

Why's that ?, Museums cant afford it, finders are giving less ?

Ultimately accessibility is reduced.
Guess what I've spent the morning doing??

TLDR it's all getting worse: number of Treasure finds up, number of donations and acquisitions down.

Today, I want to focus on donation of treasure finds to museums.

Note, these figures include those who have sold their finds to museums at a reduced rate, as well as donated them for free - there's no way of finding out how many of each.

It's even worse than that... it's 4% of TREASURE finds. For the overall PAS finds we don't actuality have a figure...

4% of annual finds recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme were DONATED to Museums.... thats right 4%

📢One last time folks 4%📢

C'mon people, without Generosity, Donation, Giving, Legacy or Sharing how do we & our future generations have access to our shared heritage?
OK. These are the new, updated, figures for 2023.

Utterly miserable reading -

"1,343 #treasure finds reported in 2023 (1,091 object cases and 252 coin cases). Of these cases:

❌️328 (24%) were acquired by museums (260 object cases, 68 coin cases)"❌️

WE shouldn't have to BUY our heritage back, it should be accessible

Great advice from Ecclesiastical Insurance for Heritage Sites

Smash-and-grab attacks at heritage properties are a growing problem.

Attacks are typically carried out at speed.

Burglaries are usually carefully planned, targeting portable high-value items.
