Calvin and Hobbes was pivotal to fostering my love of reading and Calvin's expansive vocabulary fueled my own writerly ambitions. It's been a beautiful thing to watch my six-year-old daughter have the same experience and same awakening in her mind.

It also completely reinforces the themes of the strip, which is in many ways about the wonders of imagination and self-expression. Watterson always refused to give a straight answer about the "realness" of Hobbes. Selling millions of stuffed versions would have answered it pretty definitely.

If you read the 10th anniversary edition or the complete collection, he openly talks about how relentless the syndicate was in pressuring him on this. He held fast, under duress. The fact Calvin and Hobbes exists only in that one format is part of what it gives it its power and resonance.
